Spring Starts and New Beginnings: Welcoming Four New Survey Team Members

There could hardly have been a better backdrop for welcoming our newest starters to Plowman Craven. With the spring blossom in full bloom outside our offices this April, it was the perfect time for surveying in spring.

As the cherry trees came into flower, we were delighted to welcome five new members to our survey team. It’s a unique experience, surveying during spring weather, as the scenery is truly inspiring.

  • Ejike Madumore, Survey Assistant
  • Yogesh KC, Survey Assistant

Starting a new role is always exciting. For those beginning a career in surveying there is also a huge amount to learn. Before heading out onto projects, our new starters spent time getting to grips with the specialist equipment and techniques they will be using in the field. In fact, beginning their training by surveying amongst springtime blossoms brought extra energy to the team.

Leading the training was Marianna Carcano, Learning and Development Specialist. She introduced the team to the surveying instruments they will soon be working with on site. The atmosphere felt distinctly spring-like, making the surveying process even more enjoyable.

One of the key pieces of equipment used during the session was a Leica total station. It is an essential surveying instrument that combines electronic distance measurement and angle measurement to record precise positions and dimensions. From setting up the tripod correctly to looking through the instrument, taking readings and understanding how the data is collected, the session gave our new starters a practical introduction to the tools of the trade, a perfect hands-on example of surveying in spring environments.

Learning surveying is about far more than simply operating equipment. It is about accuracy, observation and understanding how every measurement contributes to a much bigger picture. Whether surveying a building, monitoring a structure or preparing data for a project, every detail matters. And, especially when it takes place in spring, surveying can bring additional challenges and opportunities.

During the training, the new starters learned:

  • How to safely set up and level survey equipment
  • The importance of precision and accuracy in measurements
  • How total stations are used to capture data in the field
  • Why teamwork and communication are essential on site
  • How practical surveying skills are developed through hands-on experience each spring season

The training also gave the new team members the chance to work together. They could ask questions and build confidence before joining live projects. Undertaking these activities whilst surveying in spring added to their sense of camaraderie.

With the sunshine out and the blossom surrounding the training area, a new group of enthusiastic surveyors was ready to begin their careers. As a result, it was a fitting start to the season and truly showcased the value of springtime surveying as an entry point into the field.

We are delighted to welcome George, Wallace, Ejike and Yogesh to the Plowman Craven team. We look forward to seeing them develop and thrive in their new roles, especially as they gain more experience surveying in spring’s dynamic conditions.
