Plowman Craven Showcases Rail Innovation at Railway Industry Association SME Group Event

Plowman Craven was proud to take part in the Railway Industry Association (RIA) SME Group event held on 23 April 2026 at RIA Offices in London, where industry leaders gathered to discuss the future of the rail supply chain and the vital role SMEs play in driving innovation across the sector.

Representing Plowman Craven, Gideon Simons, Strategic Pursuits Manager, spoke during the SME Spotlight session, sharing how SMEs can help deliver smarter, safer and more efficient outcomes across the rail industry through innovation in surveying, asset management and digital delivery.

Drawing on Plowman Craven’s expertise across the full infrastructure lifecycle, Gideon highlighted how the business is helping to de-risk complex rail environments through cutting-edge digital surveying, advanced geospatial solutions, innovative drone technology and insight-led asset intelligence.

A key focus of his presentation was the use of confined space drones for the inspection and monitoring of underground assets and tunnels, an approach that is transforming how critical infrastructure can be assessed safely, efficiently and with greater data accuracy.

Gideon also explored the wider opportunity for the rail industry to benefit from more centralised and accessible data platforms. By integrating asset information, geospatial intelligence and Building Information Modelling (BIM), organisations can unlock stronger decision-making and support major industry initiatives such as the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and Great British Railways (GBR).

“The event created some excellent conversations around how SMEs can support major programmes through innovation, collaboration and smarter use of data,” said Gideon. “There is huge potential in working together more effectively to improve project outcomes across the rail network.”

The event provided valuable insights from senior industry representatives on topics including SME engagement, work bank visibility, payment terms, and stronger collaboration between Tier 1 contractors and specialist suppliers.

Discussions with Network Rail representatives also highlighted positive progress through dedicated SME support initiatives, including regional SME champions, increased opportunities for engagement, and a stronger focus on improving SME participation across the supply chain.

Hosted by Railway Industry Association, the event reinforced the importance of supporting a dynamic and sustainable rail supply sector. RIA represents more than 450 member companies in an industry that contributes £41 billion to the UK economy and supports over 640,000 jobs nationwide.

Plowman Craven looks forward to continuing these important conversations and building strong partnerships that help shape the future of UK rail infrastructure.
