Zara McGregor joins ARPAS-UK Board to help shape STEM engagement in the drone sector

At a time when the UK drone industry is rapidly evolving, organisations such as ARPAS-UK are playing a vital role. Moreover, one young professional is helping to shape its future.

ARPAS-UK, the UK trade association representing the uncrewed aviation and drone sector, has appointed Zara McGregor, Chief UAS Pilot at Plowman Craven, as one of its newest directors.

Believed to be among the youngest directors appointed to the board, Zara’s nomination reflects a growing recognition across the sector. Fresh perspectives, digital engagement, and new talent are vital to the future of uncrewed aviation.

Having joined Plowman Craven less than a year ago, Zara has already made a significant impact within the business and wider drone community. Through her work in surveying, aerial data capture, and STEM engagement, she has become a passionate advocate for making the industry more accessible to younger generations.

“I know I don’t have 20 years of experience like some people in the industry,” Zara said. “But I’m proactive, passionate, and willing to speak up. I want to help make the drone sector feel more open, engaging, and inclusive for people entering the industry.”

ARPAS-UK (Association of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems UK) represents organisations and professionals working across the drone and uncrewed aviation sectors. These include infrastructure inspection and surveying, aviation, engineering, and regulatory development. Importantly, the organisation works closely with government departments, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and industry groups. This collaboration helps shape the future of drone operations in the UK.

Zara was nominated by senior industry figures including Plowman Craven Managing Director James Arnott and ARPAS-UK director Craig Lippett. They recognised her enthusiasm, communication skills, and forward-thinking approach.

Speaking about the appointment, James Arnott, pictured below said:

“Zara represents exactly the kind of energy and innovation our industry needs. She brings a modern perspective, a strong technical understanding and a real passion for engaging the next generation of drone professionals.”

During the ARPAS-UK annual conference and AGM, attended by more than 100 industry members, Zara delivered a speech. She outlined her vision for the future of the association and the wider drone sector.

Among her priorities are increasing STEM outreach, improving social media and digital engagement. Furthermore, she is making technical discussions more accessible to newcomers entering the industry.

“There are so many different routes into drone careers,” Zara explained. “I want ARPAS-UK to showcase that better and create more engaging content that helps people understand the opportunities available.”

She also believes the industry must continue evolving to attract younger talent and wider participation.

“Sometimes industries can unintentionally create barriers with too much jargon or assumptions about what people already know. I think it’s important that people feel comfortable asking questions, learning and contributing.”

Zara’s appointment comes at a significant moment for the UK drone sector. New technologies, regulations and commercial applications continue to expand across infrastructure, surveying, inspection and environmental services.

For Plowman Craven, the appointment reinforces the company’s ongoing investment in innovation, professional development and the future of uncrewed aerial systems.

As one of the industry’s emerging voices, Zara is already proving that experience is not only measured in years. It is also measured in enthusiasm, leadership and the confidence to help drive change.
