Recently, Plowman Craven welcomed 18 T Level Civil Engineering students from West Herts College to our Harpenden headquarters as part of their annual recurring visit. They attended for an engaging and hands-on introduction to the world of surveying and geospatial science. The event offered invaluable insight into the geospatial field for all participants.
As surveying forms an important part of the Civil Engineering curriculum, the visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the profession. Moreover, they were able to explore the diverse career pathways available within the geospatial sector. This experience gave a real sense of how geospatial principles are applied in a professional context.
Led by Marianna Carcano, the session explored the evolution of surveying and the increasingly important role that geospatial professionals play in shaping the built and natural environment. Students learned how survey-grade accurate data underpins decision-making across industries. For example, this includes infrastructure and construction. In addition, architecture, asset management and environmental projects rely on the data. This highlighted the real-world applications of geospatial topics.
The presentation highlighted how advances in technology have transformed the profession. Geospatial data is now more accessible than ever before, and the demand for highly skilled surveyors is increasing. These professionals are capable of collecting, analysing and interpreting that information. In addition, these changes have further emphasised the impact of geospatial innovations in the sector.
To bring the subject to life, students were introduced to the wide range of surveying disciplines represented across Plowman Craven’s business. The variety on display showcased the breadth of the geospatial industry. They also toured our equipment store. There, they were able to see the specialist tools and technologies used by different survey teams.

A particular highlight of the visit was the opportunity to get hands-on experience with some of the latest reality capture technologies. For example, students interacted with the NavVis VLX mobile mapping system and Matterport Virtual Tour technology. They were encouraged to try the equipment themselves, helping them gain a practical understanding of how modern survey data is collected and used. This process helps to create accurate digital representations of real-world environments. It illustrates the integration of geospatial thinking with technology.
As an approved development partner for both the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Plowman Craven is committed not only to maintaining the highest professional standards across the industry but also to supporting the next generation of surveying professionals throughout their career journey. This approach also aligns closely with the values central to geospatial education.
Engagement with schools, colleges and universities forms an important part of our Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy. It helps raise awareness of the opportunities available within the geospatial sector and encourages future talent to consider careers in surveying and related disciplines. Geospatial awareness is key to inspiring the next generation.
We would like to thank the students and staff from West Herts College for visiting us. We look forward to continuing to support aspiring surveyors as they take their first steps into the profession. Our continued support strengthens the geospatial community.
