Recently, at the Plowman Craven head office, a new cohort of junior talent took their first steps into the world of surveying. This marked an exciting milestone in their professional journeys.
Sam Weller, Joanro Gomez and Hayden Hockley have joined the business as Junior Surveyors across the sectors for Digital Construction Property, Digital Construction Rail, and Inspection. Hayden is also stepping into the specialist role of Junior Pilot. Their introduction to the industry began with foundational training. This training was designed to equip them with the essential skills and knowledge required in a fast-evolving sector.

The session, led by Learning & Development Specialist Marianna Carcano, focused on basic instrument training and laser scanning. These are core competencies that underpin modern surveying practices. From understanding equipment setup and calibration to gaining hands-on experience with advanced scanning technology, the training provided a strong technical grounding.
What made the session particularly impactful was its balance of theory and practical application. Moreover, the juniors were able to engage directly with the equipment, building confidence while developing an appreciation for the precision and accuracy required in the field.
This kind of early investment in training is crucial. As surveying continues to evolve through digital innovation and emerging technologies, equipping new starters with the right skills from the outset ensures both individual success and long-term business growth.
Beyond the technical aspects, the training also introduced the juniors to the collaborative culture that defines the organisation. Learning alongside peers, supported by experienced professionals, creates an environment where knowledge-sharing and continuous development thrive.

Welcoming new talent is always an exciting moment, but it is the commitment to nurturing that talent that truly sets organisations apart. With a strong foundation now in place, Sam, Joanro and Hayden are well-positioned to grow within their roles. As a result, they will contribute to the future of surveying across property, rail and inspection.
