That was the key message from James Arnott, Managing Director of Inspection at Plowman Craven<\/strong>, during a recent webinar hosted by Flyability<\/a>. In this session, he explored how modern drone inspection technology is transforming the way facilities are managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing real-world examples from complex industrial environments, James demonstrated how organisations are replacing reactive inspections with proactive, data-driven asset management. He showed this through confined-space drones, survey-grade digital twins and repeatable inspection data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seeing Problems Before They Become Failures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Facilities rarely fail without warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corrosion, movement and deterioration often develop quietly over many years. These issues remain hidden within inaccessible spaces that are difficult, expensive or unsafe for engineers to inspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using confined-space drone technology such as the Flyability Elios 3, organisations can now safely access these environments without scaffolding or rope access. Moreover, they do so without exposing personnel to unnecessary risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The collapse was simply the loudest symptom. Buildings often deteriorate quietly over time, and by the time something fails, the cost and disruption are far greater than they needed to be.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

James explained that routine inspections using drones allow owners to identify early signs of deterioration. This happens before these signs develop into operational or safety-critical failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emergency Response That Delivers Long-Term Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the webinar, James shared the example of an emergency inspection. This followed the collapse of a suspended ceiling inside a major cold storage distribution facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With millions of pounds of stock at risk and uncertainty surrounding the condition of neighbouring structures, rapid assessment was essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within 48 hours, Plowman Craven had mobilised an inspection team using the Elios 3 confined-space drone. This allowed them to safely assess the damaged area without placing engineers beneath an unstable structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection confirmed that the primary steelwork remained structurally sound. It also identified corrosion within the suspended ceiling fixing system as the cause of failure. More importantly, similar deterioration was discovered elsewhere across the facility. Therefore, preventative maintenance could be planned before further incidents occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What began as an emergency response quickly evolved into a proactive maintenance strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspection Data That Supports Better Decisions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern inspections are no longer just about collecting photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining high-resolution imagery with survey-grade LiDAR point clouds, inspection teams can create accurate digital twins. These twins provide a permanent record of an asset’s condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repeated inspections can then be compared over time. As a result, maintenance teams can identify trends, monitor deterioration and prioritise repairs based on evidence rather than fixed inspection intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When you can compare inspections over time, you’re no longer reacting to failures. You’re making informed decisions based on evidence, understanding where assets are changing and intervening before problems become critical.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

This shift towards risk-based asset management helps organisations reduce operational disruption, control maintenance costs and improve long-term resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Emergency Call-Outs to Continuous Asset Intelligence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

James believes the future of inspection lies in creating a continuous understanding of asset condition. This should take priority instead of waiting for failures to occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By combining drone inspections, digital twins and geospatial intelligence, facilities teams gain the information they need to make confident maintenance decisions. Simultaneously, they significantly reduce the need for personnel to enter hazardous environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
