At Plowman Craven, we’re passionate about inspiring the next generation of talent. We help young people discover the exciting career opportunities available within the geospatial and surveying industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of our ongoing commitment to STEM education and community outreach, we recently welcomed students from Katherine Warington School (KWS) <\/a>for a week-long work experience programme. It was designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the world of surveying and geospatial technology. Moreover, they were taught and led by Marianna Carcano, Learning & Development Specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing Surveying to Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the week, students were given a unique insight into the diverse range of surveying disciplines that underpin the built environment and infrastructure sectors. Our experts introduced the students to the fundamentals of surveying. They explained how accurate geospatial data supports everything from construction and engineering projects to heritage conservation and digital twins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rather than simply observing, the students were encouraged to get involved and experience the technology first-hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hands-On Learning with Industry-Leading Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The programme combined classroom-based learning with practical exercises, allowing students to explore both traditional and cutting-edge surveying techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activities included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • Sketching and measuring exercises using traditional tape methods<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Operating a Total Station to understand precision measurement and site control<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Capturing reality data with the Leica RTC360 laser scanner<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Exploring mobile mapping technology with the Leica MLX system<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Learning about high-definition scanning using the Leica P40<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • Creating immersive digital spaces using Matterport technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    These practical sessions gave students a real appreciation of how modern surveying combines technical expertise with advanced technology. This allows them to capture, analyse and visualise the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Experiencing Live Projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    One of the highlights of the week was the opportunity to visit live project sites and see surveying professionals at work. In addition, students gained valuable insight into how the data collected in the field is used to support real-world projects and decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    By witnessing surveying operations in action, students were able to connect the skills they were learning with tangible outcomes across the built environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Supporting STEM and Local Communities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Work experience programmes like this play an important role in helping young people understand the breadth of career opportunities available within STEM industries. Surveying remains a profession that many students may not encounter through traditional career pathways. Therefore, educational outreach initiatives are particularly valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Building strong relationships with local schools such as Katherine Warington School helps us create meaningful opportunities for students to explore future careers. At the same time, students develop practical skills and confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Investing in the Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    At Plowman Craven, we believe that encouraging curiosity and providing access to industry experience is essential for developing the next generation of surveyors, geomatics specialists and built environment professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We would like to thank the students and staff from Katherine Warington School for their enthusiasm throughout the week. It was a pleasure to share our knowledge, showcase our technology and hopefully inspire some future careers in surveying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
