Inspiring the Next Generation of Surveyors and Engineers
At Plowman Craven, investing in people starts long before careers begin. Supporting education, skills development, and STEM engagement is a core part of how we help shape the future of the built environment, and National STEM Day 2025 is a perfect moment to reflect on that commitment.
We are passionate about inspiring the next generation of surveyors, engineers, and digital construction professionals by connecting education with real-world practice. One of the driving forces behind this work is our Learning and Development Specialist, Marianna Carcano MCInstCES, who actively champions STEM education both inside and outside the business.
Building Strong Links with Education
Marianna regularly works with a range of further and higher education institutions, including MK College, Hertfordshire College, Newcastle University, and the University of Hertfordshire, delivering lectures and practical insights into the surveying profession. These sessions help students understand how classroom learning translates into live projects, emerging technologies, and real careers.
Alongside this, Plowman Craven supports work experience placements for 15–16-year-olds, giving younger students early exposure to surveying, geomatics, and digital data capture. These opportunities are designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and demonstrate the breadth of roles available within the industry.
Turning Learning into Practice
For university students, our summer placements provide hands-on experience with real projects, tools, and workflows. Under Marianna’s guidance and the support of our wider teams, students gain practical skills that bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice, helping them graduate with a clearer understanding of industry expectations and opportunities.
Investing in the Talent of Tomorrow
The enthusiasm, curiosity, and fresh perspectives we see through our STEM initiatives continually reinforce why this work matters. By supporting education at every stage, from schools to universities, we’re not only helping individuals develop their potential, but also strengthening the future of our industry.
At Plowman Craven, training, education, and STEM engagement aren’t side projects, they’re a long-term investment in people, innovation, and sustainable growth. We’re proud to play our part in developing the talent of tomorrow.
