Plowman Craven delivered a high-accuracy UAS survey of critical rail infrastructure at Battersea Pier to support track renewal works across a 660-metre section of railway. Using the Vogel Freedom system, the team captured a 3D topographical survey, high-resolution point cloud and orthophoto covering 5 km of track. This airborne approach significantly shortened the programme and avoided disruption to rail operations.
To support the renewal programme, Network Rail required a Band-1 verified survey of a complex multi-track environment where lines converge alongside the River Thames. The location presented restricted access, safety risks and operational constraints. A UAS-based approach was selected to capture comprehensive asset data safely and maintain normal train services while meeting demanding programme timelines.
Project requirements included:
Plowman Craven deployed the Vogel Freedom platform using automated waypoint flight planning to capture the site efficiently and accurately. Extensive pre-planning ensured safe and compliant operations, including identification of secure take-off and landing zones, consultation with local residents and businesses, and engagement with aviation, river and environmental authorities. Wildlife specialists supported operations due to nesting Peregrine Falcons.
Imagery was processed to produce a verified topographical model, high-resolution point cloud and true-to-scale orthophoto suitable for design and engineering applications. The full workflow, from mobilisation to final outputs, was completed within an 11-day period.
Key planning and compliance steps included notification and coordination with NATS, the Port of London Authority and police, along with formal flight risk assessments and communication procedures.
This survey demonstrates the value of UAS technology in complex rail environments where traditional methods present operational and safety challenges. The approach enabled rapid data capture with minimal site presence, while maintaining the accuracy and confidence required for Network Rail renewal works.
High-definition digital outputs support ongoing maintenance, renewals and monitoring.
“Plowman Craven’s approach allowed us to rethink what was possible at Bishopsgate Goodsyard. Their ability to safely capture data from complex and previously inaccessible areas was instrumental in supporting our upcycling strategy. It’s enabled us to move forward with a clearer understanding of what we can retain and enhance.”
