Balancing Work and Study: Michael Askwith’s Journey at Plowman Craven

Balancing full-time work with higher education can seem impossible, but for Michael Askwith, Lead Surveyor in Plowman Craven’s Asset Management team, it’s a rewarding reality.

Michael is currently completing a BSc (Hons) Surveying and Mapping Sciences via Geospatial and Mapping Science Degree (Apprenticeship) at the University of East London, alongside leading projects for Plowman Craven.

The five-year course, completed through employer sponsorship, was inspired by a colleague who had done it the year before. Michael wanted to broaden his skills and become a more well-rounded surveyor.

“The company’s been brilliant. I get the flexibility I need and encouragement from everyone around me. It’s great to know they genuinely want you to do well,” he says.

His studies have deepened his understanding of surveying principles and geospatial data management, knowledge he applies directly in his role.

“What I learn at university fits perfectly with what I do at work. It’s all connected and that makes the studying worthwhile,” he explains.

A typical week sees Michael managing client deliverables, reviewing survey data, and fitting in coursework and lectures in the evenings or on his days off. It’s demanding, but structure and motivation keep him on track:

“It’s all about being organised. If you’re disciplined and committed, it’s absolutely doable,” he adds.

Michael hopes his story will inspire others thinking about studying while working:

“If you’re considering taking that step, go for it. Don’t wait until everything feels easy, because it never will. The support here makes it possible.”

Plowman Craven actively encourages professional development, supporting staff at all levels to pursue further qualifications and training. For Michael, that support has transformed a long-term ambition into a tangible achievement, one assignment at a time.
